Refereeing Decisions Review: BiH Cup Round of 16

To provide expert clarifications on key refereeing decisions and VAR interventions, the Football Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Referees Committee will publish post-match analyses for each round of the Wwin League and the BiH Cup.

Here are the key refereeing decisions from the Cup Round of 16:

  • FK Željezničar vs. NK Vareš
    • 57': After the visiting goalkeeper fouled the home side’s player No. 10, the referee correctly awarded a penalty. However, per VAR protocol, the second assistant referee flagged an offside position of the home team's attacker before the foul occurred. VAR confirmed the offside, and the refereeing team fully adhered to the VAR protocol, ultimately making the correct decision.
  • FK Sarajevo vs. FK Sloga
    • 82': In a struggle for possession inside the opponents' penalty area, the visiting team's defender No. 15 stepped on the home attacker’s foot, committing a reckless foul. After a correct VAR intervention, the referee properly awarded a penalty to the home team and booked the defender.
  • FK Borac vs. NK Čelik
    • 43': A visiting defender’s arm was in an unnatural position, making his body wider when the ball struck his hand. After a proper VAR review, the referee correctly awarded a penalty to the home team.
    • During the penalty kick, the visiting team committed two distinct infractions:
      • The goalkeeper moved off the goal line before the ball was struck, failing to maintain at least one foot on the line.
      • The goalkeeper's teammate (player No. 3) entered the penalty area early and actively contested for the ball, impacting play.
    • According to VAR protocol, all penalty kicks are subject to review. The VAR team correctly intervened, leading the referee to order a penalty retake.
    • 77': Without any attempt to play the ball, the visiting team's player No. 24 made a reckless challenge on the home team's player No. 3. The referee, despite being well-positioned, initially misjudged the incident, issuing only a warning. However, after a correct VAR intervention, the referee overturned the decision and correctly sent off player No. 24 for serious foul play.
    • The FFBiH Referees Committee remains available for any inquiries regarding the Laws of the Game. The Committee is dedicated to consistent application of the rules and fully rejects any baseless pressures. In accordance with the Laws of the Game and defined regulations, the Committee will appropriately sanction any misapplication of these rules.
