U-21 Team Ends Qualifiers With a Defeat

The Bosnia and Herzegovina national under-21 football team was defeated today at the Grbavica stadium in Sarajevo by Cyprus 1:3 in the final round of Group H qualifiers for the European Championship.

The match was attended by the "A" team head coach Sergej Barbarez, sporting director Emir Spahić, and their associates Saša Papac, Ninoslav Milenković, and Kenan Hasagić, as well as FFBiH general secretary Adnan Džemidžić.

The first half saw balanced gameplay between the two penalty areas, without goal-scoring opportunities until the 44th minute when Muhamed Buljubašić freed himself from his marker and shot accurately from the edge of the penalty area to give the young Dragons the lead. Just a minute later, Cyprus had a chance, but Nicolas Koutsakos hit the crossbar. In the 2nd minute of added time in the first half, the visitors took the ball from our defenders, and Koutsakos scored for 1:1.

Cyprus started the second half better, and already in the 47th minute, Giannis Satsias sent the ball past Luka Damjanović for 1:2. The same player scored the third goal for the visiting team 20 minutes later. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished the match with 10 players after Admir Bristrić received a second yellow card in the 79th minute for a foul.

After the game, head coach Vinko Marinović said: "Unfortunately, we suffered a defeat. We managed to take the lead in time and we played well up to that point. But then, with one mistake, we allowed the opponent to get back into the game. The other two goals also came after our own mistakes. Cyprus capitalized on that and secured the win."

Defender Rijad Smajić commented: "We were expecting a win today and wanted to earn those three points. However, we made three individual mistakes and ended up losing. We had the will, but we played too much with 'long balls;' that wasn't our goal. We have to admit that the opponent was better and punished all our errors."
