Football makes me happier and stronger

Today marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is only one day in the international calendar, but it symbolizes the actions that should be taken every day to create communities that are diverse and acceptable to all people.

Despite all the difficulties and challenges, Omer Nurkić is very enthusiastic about what he loves, and that is football. The former player of NK Hajduk from Orašje, as a coach and instructor, worked on the projects Cross Cultures and Open Fun Football Schools, and as a head coach of youth national teams of the Football Federation of Posavina County. He is also a coach in the youth teams of HNK Cibalia from Vinkovci.

He is the founder of the Atletico Academy 1919 from Orašje, which brings together over 100 girls and boys aged 7 to 15, not only from Orašje, but also from Domaljevac, Odžak, Šamac, Brčko, Gradačac. The main goal of the Academy is to make children happier through training, and to guide them in a way to be good athletes and good people.

“Playing football concretely, as well as participating in it, once as a player today as a coach, has a completely new dimension in the culture of a person’s life dedicated to this profession. Namely, it all makes sense when you spend part of your life enjoying what you do, practice it and then one day selflessly pass it on to others”, begins the story of Omer Nurkić.

Football brought him many memorable moments in his childhood:

“The memories you carry within you, the smell of childhood, the smell of grass, asphalt, earth, gravel and other surfaces where we ran for the ball, all mixed with sweat, tears or smiles on our then children’s faces. Then the smell of football boots in the bag, the hallway, the dressing room, now the smell of youth. You turn around for a moment and it’s all behind you, you suddenly become a player, a man, then you enter the world of adults, you take responsibility of a person who will show the way to generations of young female and male athletes and guide them through that world of socialization, education and give them the opportunity to be formed as persons. There are many of those memories and moments in us, and I believe that many of my friends and colleagues will find themselves in the above words.”

Even today, Nurkić cannot imagine his life without this sport:

My current involvement in football is very important, because so many people are preoccupied with obligations as well as responsibility towards their professions, so that there is simply no room to deal with the spirits and temptations you carry within yourself, because comprehensiveness and dedication to the work I do makes me calmer, happier and stronger.”

Omer Nurkić points out that football has played a significant role in the challenging periods of the COVID-19 virus pandemic:

“In all this world psychosis, when it comes to pandemics, I can point out that playing sports, as well as training sessions, whether they were individual, group or team, were a mitigating circumstance. I can freely say that football and sports in general have helped and proved to be a calming and relaxing factor”, says Nurkić and adds:

“I would like to emphasize that sport as an integral part of life in any sense - recreational, amateur or professional, makes a person healthier, more disciplined and happier, so accept him as such, find in yourselves a child, happiness, contentment and healthy life.”

Nurkić’s engagement in ŠF Atletico 1919 brought positive results:

“Today, I am a proud and happy man because, through my coaching work, I believe that I have contributed at least a little to the fact that today in the women’s national teams of Bosnia and Herzegovina play two girls who were members of our Academy and two boys who are part of the youth national teams of the BH FF and HNS, and several other players who play in the highest leagues. I am sure that all those who have spent their time playing football will be able to apply it through life.”

At the end of the conversation, Omer Nurkić pointed out:

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have enabled me to be such a happy man today, all those who have helped me feel equal among them, those who have believed in me and who continue to give me the opportunity to do what I love.”
