Zukanović played 23 matches for the BH national team. The first national team’s game he played was on 16^th October 2012 in the qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup against Lithuania at the “Bilino Polje” Stadium in Zenica. Then, the BH national team won 3:0, and Zukanovic entered the game in the 74^th minute instead of Senad Lulić.

Currently, he is a member of the Italian Genoa, and in his career he played for Željezničar, Dender, Eupen, Kortrijk, Gent, Chievo, Sampdoria, Roma and Atalanta.
