Austria Beat Dragons in Zenica

Bosnia and Herzegovina lost 1:2 (0:0) against Austria tonight at Bilino Polje in Zenica, in the 6th round of Group H of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In the opening 15 minutes, our team had slight control, creating three good chances: two from Edin Džeko and one from Tarik Muharemović, all off target. Austria’s first threat came in the 24’ when David Alaba took a free kick, Michael Gregoritsch laid it back into the box, but Philipp Lienhart shot over the goalpost. In the 39’, Benjamin Tahirović’s long ball found Džeko five meters out, but he couldn’t control it and Austria cleared.

Austria took the lead in the 49’. Gregoritsch crossed from the left side, Mujakić cleared out of the 5m box, but Marcel Sabitzer pounced on the rebound and scored. A minute later, Džeko equalized after a run and cross from Demirović on the right. In the 63’, Mujakić’s cross found Džeko on the edge of the box, but he missed. Austria went back ahead in the 65’, Arnautović took a shot from the edge of the 16m area, the ball deflected to Konrad Laimer, who beat Nikola Vasilj.

Elsewhere in the group, Cyprus and Romania drew 2:2 in Nicosia.

After six rounds, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria are level on 12 points, though Austria have a game in hand, followed by Romania (7), Cyprus (4), and San Marino (0).

The national team will gather again in a month, with BiH playing away in Cyprus on October 9. Three days later, they have a friendly in Malta.
