Coach and Players Comment On the Match With Germany

Head coach Sergej Barbarez pointed out the mistakes from which our national team conceded goals but was very pleased with the team's fighting spirit and effort for most of the game: "The feelings are twofold. Some mistakes we made happen, but against such great teams, when you lose a sense of space, they punish it brutally. The first 30 minutes were very good. It wasn't easy in the locker room at halftime, but in the second half, I was satisfied with the fight and commitment. That is the essence of football and our situation, certainly. That fight, character, morale. Against such opponents, it's easy to find yourself trailing. They punish it brutally. Every match, our midfield lags in terms of strength, but we always respond well with substitutions."

Captain Edin Džeko scored his 67th goal for the Dragons against Germany: "There were good things this time, but also things that weren't good. Especially the first two goals we conceded. No matter how strong the Germans are and how they use such mistakes against us, we should have reacted better. This might be the biggest match in the careers of our young players, and they showed that the future of this team can be built upon them. After trailing by two goals and two disallowed goals, we showed character, got back into the game, and everything was open until the last minute. We move on, Hungary awaits us, and we can certainly compete with them."

Benjamin Tahirović, who came on in the second half, assisted Edin Džeko's goal from a corner: "We gave our best, we did everything the coach asked of us. We had a plan and showed that both in attack and defense, we had a clear strategy, even though we lost. We have another match on Monday, and we know what we need to do. From the first meeting, the coach insisted on that mentality, on the willpower, that when we go into a duel, we go in with the will to win it. Today we showed that. We played against one of the best teams in the world, and against Hungary, we can hope for a win."

Armin Gigović fought hard against the German midfielders: "This was my first match in Zenica, and I'm very glad about that. The atmosphere was great. Unfortunately, we lost, but there was a lot of running and fighting. We left our hearts on the field. Germany is a strong team, full of quality, and we're already focusing on the next game. We certainly have quality, and we must keep fighting and improving as a team."
