The city is located on the river Lištica in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, only 20 kilometers west of Mostar.
According to the latest census, about 29,000 people live on the territory of the Municipality of Široki Brijeg, and slightly more than 6,000 in the city itself.

The town began to be built at the beginning of the 20th century around the Ćemer mill, and it changed its name several times in its history (Lise, Široki brig, Lištica, Široki brijeg).
