According to the latest census, Zenica with its suburbs has about 110,000 inhabitants.
Zenica developed rapidly in the period after the World War II, primarily due to the development of heavy industry.
Before the World War II, Zenica had about 15,000 inhabitants, and in 1991 as many as 145,000.
The first ironworks in this city was opened by Austria-Hungary in 1892, because this area is rich in coal ores, but also because of the proximity of the railway that passed through Zenica.
Zenica is a city located in the valley of the Bosna river at an altitude of 316 meters.
It is 70 kilometers north of Sarajevo, in the valley of the Bosna river.
Zenica has been the "base" of the football national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina for many years.
The fiery atmosphere created by the people of Zenica was certainly one of the main factors that brought Zenica this privilege before Sarajevo and other cities in BiH.

In 2013, the BH FF Training Centre was opened in Zenica, one of the most modern sports facilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond, where the matches of the Women’s U-17 European Championship will be played.
Apart from the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the football life of Zenica was marked by NK "Čelik", three-time champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1994/95, 1995/96 and 1996/97).
Čelik is also a two-time winner of the Cup of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1994/95 and 1995/96). On the international scene, Čelik has twice won the Central European Cup (1970/71 and 1971/72), as well as the Intertoto Cup (1975).
