The Dragons held a result that would’ve taken them to the World Cup until the 77', when Austria equalized and held on to that scoreline until the final whistle.
Austria had the first serious chance in 9'. Phillipp Mwene crossed from the left, and Marcel Sabitzer headed wide from five meters. Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead in 12'. Benjamin Tahirović delivered a corner from the left, Amar Memić tried to shoot, but the ball fell to Haris Tabaković, who headed it into the net through a crowd in front of goal. In 35', Nicolas Seiwald fired from 18 meters, but Nikola Vasilj made a great save. Three minutes later, Vasilj stayed alert after a run and cross from Sabitzer on the left. In 43', Austria thought they’d equalized through Konrad Laimer, but after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a foul on Amar Memić.
Four minutes into the second half, Patrick Wimmer threatened with a header after a Mwene cross, but it went wide. Austria’s second-half pressure paid off in 77', when Michael Gregoritsch capitalized on a scramble in front of goal after Marko Arnautović hit the crossbar. Just a minute earlier, Gregoritsch had gone one-on-one with Vasilj, but our keeper denied him.
We’re proud of our team for everything they’ve done in these qualifiers, and we’re certain this story isn’t over!
