Dragons Defeat Qatar

In the third round of World Cup Group B, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3:1 (2:1) in a match played at Seattle Stadium.

Our team imposed the rhythm from the opening whistle and created several good chances in the opening minutes. Ermedin Demirović threatened first in the 2' with a shot from 16 meters, but Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada made the save. Just a minute later, Ivan Šunjić tried from a similar position, but the visitors' goalkeeper was once again up to the task and pushed the ball out for a corner. Qatar created its first serious opportunity in the 13' when Akram Afif broke toward the BiH goal, but Ivan Šunjić reacted in time to clear the danger. In the 17', Ivan Bašić tried to surprise the opposing goalkeeper with a shot from around 30 meters, but the ball went over the crossbar. The home team's initiative paid off in the 29'. Kerim Alajbegović cut inside from the left, passed several defenders, and fired a precise shot from around 20 meters into the net to give Bosnia and Herzegovina a 1:0 lead. Just five minutes later, the Dragons doubled their advantage. Following an effort by Edin Džeko, Sultan Albrake inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to make it 2:0. Bosnia and Herzegovina could've added a third goal in the 38'. Alajbegović played a brilliant pass to Džeko, who found himself one-on-one with Qatar's goalkeeper, but the goalpost came to the visitors' rescue. Qatar managed to score in the 42' when Sultan Alhaydos took advantage of a mistake in our team's defense to make it 2:1. In the third minute of first-half stoppage time, the visitors threatened again, but Pedro Miguel hit the post from a tight angle on the right after a well-worked move.

As early as the 50', Stjepan Radeljić picked out Ermedin Demirović with an excellent pass who tried to head the ball down to Edin Džeko, but the Bosnia and Herzegovina captain couldn't reach it. Qatar threatened several times in the second half through Akram Afif. He found himself in good positions in the 57' and 59', but both of his efforts went wide. The winner was effectively decided in the 80'. Esmir Bajraktarević first cut inside from the left in trademark fashion and unleashed a powerful shot from 18 meters, but Qatar's goalkeeper managed to make the save. From the resulting corner, Ermin Mahmić reacted best inside the visitors' box and scored to seal the final 3:1 scoreline. In the 86', Sead Kolašinac made an excellent intervention to stop a dangerous Qatar attack.

In the other Group B match, Switzerland defeated Canada 2:1 to finish top of the group with seven points. Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina both ended the group stage with four points, but Canada claimed second place thanks to a better goal difference. Qatar finished with one point.

The Dragons now await the outcome of the remaining groups. If they finish among the eight best third-placed teams, they'll qualify for the Round of 32, where, according to the current projections, they could face another World Cup host nation, the United States.
