The former international referee from Slovenia will take over leadership of the refereeing body within FFBiH. His mandate includes appointing referees for Wwin League BiH and youth competitions, assigning VAR and AVAR officials, appointing referee observers, coordinating all activities related to referee education and professional development, and ultimately evaluating referees and observers in league matches. Mr. Čeferin will focus on improving and innovating within the refereeing structure, raising operational standards, implementing the latest professional methods, and aligning the system with current international practices.
In coordination with UEFA, FFBiH has entrusted Darko Čeferin (born July 11 1968), an experienced FIFA-listed referee (2000–2013), to become the first chief operative of the Federation’s refereeing organization. He officiated numerous UEFA Champions League and other club competition matches, as well as qualifiers for the 2002, 2006, and 2010 World Cups. He also refereed qualifiers for Euro 2004, 2008, and 2012. At the 2002 UEFA U-19 European Championship, he officiated the final between Spain and Germany.
FFBiH President Vico Zeljković commented on Čeferin’s appointment: "I’m pleased that in the coming period we’ll have the opportunity to work with one of the most respected figures in refereeing in the region. Appointing Darko Čeferin is a key step in strengthening the work of our refereeing organization. This raises the bar for officiating standards. I’m confident that through his work, he’ll contribute to the quality education of a new generation of referees, the professional development of young officials, and the overall improvement of refereeing across all our competitions. This is a significant step forward in the development of BiH football. I have to point out that Mr. Čeferin has been granted full autonomy in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to him."
Following his appointment, Darko Čeferin stated: "I’d like to thank the Executive Board of the Football Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President Vico Zeljković for the trust and the opportunity to lead the FFBiH refereeing organization. I accept this role with great responsibility and a clear intention to contribute to the further development and professionalization of refereeing in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In cooperation with all structures within the Federation, as well as with UEFA, I’ll focus on raising the quality of referee education and training, strengthening professional standards, introducing modern methods and practices, and creating conditions for the growth of young refereeing talent. I’m convinced that through systematic and transparent work, we can achieve significant progress - both in domestic competitions and in laying the groundwork for international recognition of referees from Bosnia. I look forward to working with everyone in the football community in BiH and I believe that together we can raise the level of refereeing quality and, in doing so, contribute to the overall development of BiH football."
