After the excellent qualifications in which the She-Dragons finished in second place in Group E behind Denmark, and ahead of Montenegro, Azerbaijan and Malta, Samira Hurem’s chosen team sought passage to the big competition through the play-off.
Although weakened by Milena Nikolić, Sofija Krajšumović and Amela Kršo not playing, the BH national team players showed a quality game, however, the Welsh women celebrated in the end, and they will fight with Switzerland on 11th October for a qualification for the World Cup. The match was played in a nice atmosphere in front of 15,200 spectators.
The home team entered the match more offensively and the first opportunity was created by the Welsh national team in the 6th minute. After a good action, Gemma Evans from the left side sent the ball into the middle for Jessica Fishlock, whose shot was well stopped by Almina Hodžić.
Our best football players responded in the 9th minute. Selma Kapetanović crossed from the corner from the right side, Marija Aleksić shot from ten meters, but goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan blocked her shot.
Ceri Holland hit a good header from a good position in the 11th minute, and Hodžić was once again up to the task. Rachel Rowe and Holland had good attempts in the 17th minute, but the goalkeeper of the BH national team again managed to save her goal with excellent reactions. Although it was played with a lot of paces, the next opportunity was seen only in the 42nd minute, when Angharad James sent the ball over the goal from the five-meter area.
In the continuation, the home team had more ball possession, and the She-Dragons played very disciplined and responsible. Led by the stopper tandem of Melisa Hasanbegović-Marija Ana Milinković, the BH national team did not allow the opponents to create a serious opportunity until the 77th minute, when Hodžić reacted brilliantly after Holland’s attempt from the five-meter area. The Welsh women managed to hit the net three times in the second half, but the home strikers were in offside positions on all three occasions and the match went into extra time.
Only at the end of the first extra time, after Rowe’s cross from a free kick from the right side, Fishlock reacted well and volleyed from about 10 meters to give Wales the advantage and victory. In the additional 30 minutes of the game, the head coach Samira Hurem was forced to make two substitutions, as Dajana Spasojević and Andrea Gavrić had to leave the pitch due to injuries. In the second extra time, there were no chances and the result did not change anymore.
