UEFA also hoped that the new championship would encourage and motivate those members who were not participating in the European women's competition to do so.
UEFA's expectations were exceeded when 40 nations applied for the first edition of the competition. For the first season, it was decided that four teams would play in the final tournament, and UEFA itself hosted in its Swiss base in Nyon. Germany won the title ahead of France, Denmark and England.
Since 2013/14, the final tournament has been expanded to 8 teams with different hosts each year. The last two competitions to be held in Sweden and the Faroe Islands have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
