Head Coach and Players on the Match Against Hungary

Head coach Sergej Barbarez pointed out our team's mistakes that led to the goals conceded but emphasized that there were no issues with effort and fighting spirit: "The idea was to start with four players at the back, two holding midfielders, three attacking midfielders, and one striker. We wanted to put Gazibegović in his club position and Hajradinović as the 'No. 10.' It started well, but towards the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, things didn't go as planned. We conceded from our own mistakes, and that's world-class quality - they come once in front of a goal and they score. We had to compensate for some players who weren't available due to cards. We tried to surprise Hungarians, and it worked well initially. Their playstyle is long balls, but I can't fault any player for their effort and fight for the national jersey. They're proud to play for this country and "A" team, and I always tell them what experience at this level means, as many aren't at this level in their clubs."

Captain Edin Džeko was unlucky and didn't score tonight but fought hard against the Hungarian defense for all 90 minutes: "We changed the formation, tried something different because we missed two key players. We started strong, had two chances, and really wanted to play, we had the willpower, and then I don't know what happened. They started playing long balls, and we accepted that style. Then we conceded from a mistake, and at this level, that gets punished. Gazibegović and Tahirović had chances, but luck wasn't on our side. Our biggest mistake was that we stopped; you could see the Hungarians were uncomfortable. All the teams in the group are two levels above us, but we shouldn't surrender beforehand. We had competitive results until nearly the end of each match."

Esmir Bajraktarević made his first appearance for the Dragons: "We started the game well, played well for the first 20 minutes, but then small mistakes happened, which we need to correct in the future. I'm committed to improving myself. I'm young here, and every day I get advice from the older players to stay focused only on football."

Nikola Katić, who has settled in our defense, said: "A hard disappointment. We lost a game that was a direct duel for staying in Nations League A and for a World Cup playoff spot. We didn't deserve it, we weren't at our best. We have to bounce back and keep working. There's a new gathering soon, we need to play well at our clubs, work harder, and when we regroup, give more and do better. For a good part of the match, we were stable, but we conceded two goals from our mistakes, the first from a rebound and lost ball in the middle, the second from a poor assessment . I can't say they outplayed us, but they were smarter. We didn't follow what the coach asked, and that's the reality of the final score."
