In the conversation for the official website of the Federation, Beus talks about this period, the improvement in work, but also about the problems, the national team and other football topics.
Mr. Beus, when you look at this time distance for a period of six previous years, a period in which you were in one of the leadership positions in the Federation, can you be satisfied with what has been achieved?
“When we take into account the situation that we found in the Football Federation, then it was really done a lot. We managed in every way to normalize the work of the FF BH. We established a better system of work, improved the internal structure of the Federation, normalized financial operations, and created a much better climate for the football development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have significantly improved the cooperation with UEFA, which gives us great support in all our processes. In these structures, we managed to position ourselves much better and get on the importance.”
In which segments is the most visible progress of the Federation, and what is still not satisfactory?
“We have significantly improved the image of BH football, especially at the international level. However, the biggest shift in my opinion is visible in the work of the national teams, especially in the “A” national team. We also achieved some great successes, such as qualification to the FIFA World Cup. A lot of good things have been done by reducing the BH Premier League, but for the quality of football we can do a lot if we reduce that league even to 10 clubs. There is certainly room for how we can fix domestic football.”
Following the continuation of the competition in BH Telecom Premier League of BH, how can you evaluate this first season with 12 clubs, or is it too early to make some conclusions?
“The Premier League with 12 clubs brought certain improvements in quality, but also in interesting things. The competition in this format is still relatively short. It will be only in a few seasons and with a time-lag to assess how successful it was. As I have already said, I hope that in the future we will have the strength to make another step forward by reducing the Premier League to 10 clubs. Then we would raise the quality of football in this highest level of competition, but lower leagues would also become more interesting.”
The new head coach of the “A” national team, Robert Prosinečki, led for the first time our national team in friendly matches, recently played in America. What impression did the performance of our young footballers on this tour leave on you, not only regarding the game, but also their attitude towards national team and obligations?
“Our footballers, who played in the USA, confirmed that the Premier League has a high quality too. I am not competent enough to find out who are the players who can continue to help the team; it’s already the job of the head coach. However, the head coach can now have a slightly better impression with what he can count on. All players have been highly motivated in the USA and we can be content with that. What is most important for us in the FF BH Executive Board is the fact that we need to ensure as much as possible better conditions on our part, so that the head coach Prosinečki can work his job as better as possible.”
In your opinion, what are the prerequisites, necessary for the further development of the national team’s and the club’s football?
“I primarily think we need a better football infrastructure in BH. Football Federation will not be able to solve it alone this problem, even with UEFA. We need sincere support from local communities. With better working conditions, we can hope for faster progress. A great impulse for a national teams’ football would be a qualification to the next UEFA European Championship for sure. We should not mention how big competitions can contribute to the football development and, in general, the stability of our work.”
How much did your work in HŠK Zrinjski help you in your current role?
“It helped me to a large extent, because, before my work in the Federation, I had the opportunity to meet all the problems that we have every day in the BH football. With these experiences, it was easier to work at this higher level. I am fortunate to be part of such a club as Zrinjski, which is one of the most successful clubs in BH, in which the rank of success is always high. I hope that part of such a mentality has been felt in my work in FF BH.”
What are the challenges in front of you and the leadership of the Federation in the coming period?
“We have several major challenges ahead of us, such as preparations for the next qualifying cycle, as well as for the Nations League. From our side we have to put a lot of things in order for all our national teams to have the best working conditions. We must continue to work on the development of domestic football, whether it is a Premier League or an amateur football that is actually the basis of this sport in all Europe. You know how challenging is to work in the BH sports. We come from football, we represent our most popular sport, and therefore we must in some way help the institutions that care about the development of sports in BH.”
And for the end, what is football for you?
“It’s a lifestyle that occupies every minute of my day; it’s something that really fills me as a football official, but also as a man who gave his life to football.”
