The first half was played cautiously by both teams, with Switzerland enjoying slightly more initiative. The visitors had the first serious chance in the 10' when Dan Ndoye shot from the left side, but the ball hit the outside of the net. Three minutes later, the same player found himself in a good position after a cross from the left, but failed to connect properly with the ball inside the box. Switzerland threatened again in the 23' through Remo Freuler, whose effort from distance went just wide. Bosnia and Herzegovina created their first real danger in the 32' when Edin Džeko crossed from the right, but Benjamin Tahirović couldn't control the ball at the far post. Near the end of the first half, in the 41', Džeko tried from 16 meters, but his shot was blocked, and the teams went into the break goalless.
At the start of the second half, Ndoye was the first to threaten with an effort from the left, but Nikola Vasilj made the save. Two minutes later, Michel Aebischer tried with a header but wasn't accurate. In the 68', Amar Dedić threatened from 20 meters, but Gregor Kobel made the save. Switzerland took the lead in the 74'. Ruben Vargas crossed from the right and Johan Manzambi ran onto the loose ball and beat Nikola Vasilj with a shot from around ten meters.
In the 80', BiH was reduced to ten men when Tarik Muharemović, as the last defender, fouled Breel Embolo. Ruben Vargas took the resulting free kick from 17 meters, but Nikola Vasilj was well positioned. However, in the 84', Ruben Vargas doubled Switzerland's lead with a shot from ten meters after an assist from Breel Embolo. In the final minute of regular time, Johan Manzambi scored his second goal of the match after a Ruben Vargas cross from the left.
Young Ermin Mahmić scored his first goal in a Dragons jersey in the third minute of stoppage time, sending a loose ball into the net from 16 meters following a corner kick. The final 4:1 scoreline was set by Swiss captain Granit Xhaka from the penalty spot after Amar Memić fouled Djibril Sow inside the penalty area.
