Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the most unique and authentic cities in Europe.
Nestled in a mountainous setting that gives it a specific warmth and visual identity, Sarajevo has been a meeting place for centuries.
Here, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Mediterranean and Balkan cultures intertwine in a way that remains unique to this day.
The city is alive, full of contrasts and an incredibly rich history that is visible in every part of its urban fabric — from the old Baščaršija, cobblestone streets and artisan shops, to modern parts of the city with business centers, museums and cultural institutions.
Sarajevo is one of the rare places in the world where a mosque, an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral and a synagogue stand on the same street — a symbol of the city's spirit of tolerance and multiculturalism.
Sarajevo is also a city of major world events.
The most significant among them are the XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984, an event that marked the sporting and cultural identity of the city and the entire country. The Olympic symbols and spirit of that time are still deeply embedded in the people of Sarajevo, but also in the sports infrastructure that was built specifically for that event.
Basketball holds a special place in Sarajevo's sporting heritage. KK "Bosna", founded in this city, won the European Champions Cup (today's Euroleague) in 1979, becoming the first club from the former Yugoslavia to become European champion.
This success remains one of the greatest sporting moments not only for Sarajevo, but for the entire region.
Sarajevo has also produced numerous successes in football, athletics, martial arts and winter sports, and its sports schools have continued to develop new generations of talent.
The city hosts many international competitions, tournaments and events that confirm its ability to organize high-level events.
As part of the UEFA European Women's Junior Championship 2026, Sarajevo will be one of the main centers of the tournament. The two largest stadiums — “Koševo” and “Grbavica” — are located in parts of the city with a rich sporting tradition and ideal infrastructure for a tournament of this magnitude.
Participants, professional teams and visitors will have the opportunity to experience Sarajevo as a city where history, hospitality, sporting energy and top-notch organization come together. It is this combination that makes Sarajevo an unforgettable host of major international events.
